Getting it right for clients

When it comes to supporting clients one of the things that will make a huge difference is their own mindset. If they feel frustrated, anxious, defeated or resigned that things will never change, they likely never will.

Human mindset is rarely put front and centre but if you take the time to support the human end of the lead you will notice a huge impact to the outcome of all of your coaching programs.

When clients feel differently in the moment, they are better equipped to make meaningful change and advocate for their dog in situations which may have felt overwhelming before. 

With increased optimism they will start to see things differently, reframe challenges and notice things shifting for the better as they work with you. 

This is particularly important when working with reactivity but can equally be applied to the stresses of bringing home a new puppy or surviving adolescence. Whatever the challenge, approaching it with the right mindset will make all the difference.

What can you do to help?

Supporting your clients with their mindset can seem a bit daunting, especially when we are well versed in working with dogs and their behaviour but find the emotions at the other end of the lead harder to know what to do with.

At times it can feel like we end up fulfilling the role of therapist as well as the canine expert we were brought in to be!

Our role is so entangled with the human side of things that giving ourselves some additional tools to support our clients with their own emotions can really help.

You might consider focusing part of your coaching sessions around this topic but putting together resources to help your clients between sessions can also really help.

Create videos for them to watch that help them understand how they are feeling and know they are not alone. Design games to support them in shifting their mindset to focus on wins rather than problems. Give them activities to do that support their own wellbeing so they are able to be their for their dog fully no matter what happens.

And do all of this in a way that helps them understand why it's important to do this for the bigger picture so they feel motivated to try something new.
